[...] In the aftermath of Prop 8, I’ve seen plenty of postings around the blogosphere suggesting that the leadership of the Church “blundered” into this situation and clearly didn’t think through the political and public perception ramifications. As I’ve said before, hogwash; I believe the Church knew full well what the likely ramifications would be. [...]

Incurring the wrath of some, particularly culturally liberal elites, on an issue as to which 30 states have now amended their state constitutions so as to be in conformity with with the Church's position, will not hurt the standing of the Church or LDS people in the eyes of the American public in general. In fact, taking some heat for what you believe in will win respect. But, an important point is that gay and lesbian activists are now trying to spin that the Church "leadership", rather than the LDS people, are their target. It is more politically correct for them to attack an institution than a people, especially when they need to avoid appearing bigoted. Their spin is untrue, because, rather than the Church writing a check, tens of thousands of LDS people gave their money and time. Remember who you are.

Bruce,

Excellent analysis. A couple of your thoughts particularly struck me:

1. The Brethren are not dummies. They know exactly what they are doing. They knew exactly what they were doing when the issued the call to the California Saints to become active in this campaign.

2. Many, possibly even most who are talkative here in the "bloggernacle" were clearly against the Church's involvement in this, and likely all other matters political. This has been my experience not only with Prop. 8 but with this same issue in the past.

3. As time goes on, we--the saints--will stand further and further apart from Babylon--as it should be. We will have to decide where we will stand--with Zion or in the midst of Babylon. We cannot have a foot in each. I view this exercise as one of likely many precursors yet to come.

Good post. Thanks.
