you are right in the the council is divided 6 and 6 but 6 are not there to defend the person before the council, Their role is to make sure the person is dealt with fairly. but in practice they say very little till the end when the stake president asks them if they felt things were conducted fairly. From long experience there is never a descenting comment. No one will challenge the stake president. most High council members feel it is their responsibility to rubber stamp the stake presidents decisions.

I'm not sure Bishops have that discretion either, but that doesn't mean they might not take it. My last trip through the handbook didn't include any alternative to an additional DC. I'm not sure how a counselor could provide any useful counsel without a DC being convened.

I think you're misreading my post a bit -- my point is that lifting disfellowshipment doesn't requirement rebaptism but comes as a result of a decision at the bishopric level (presuming that the disfellowshipment occurred at the ward level) or at the stake president level (if it occurred at the stake level). Note that for some causes of excommunication (such as sexual abuse of children), rebaptism can only occur after the case has been reviewed and approved by the First Presidency of the Church.

Second, the bishop does not need to necessarily reconvene a disciplinary council to revoke the disfellowshipment -- merely inform his counselors of his intent to do so and see if they have objections. I speak as someone who has been a counselor in a bishopric twice and have had that occur. Having not served in a stake presidency, I can't comment on whether stake presidents exercise that same discretion.

Thanks for the comment. ..bruce..

Point 4 is incorrect, in that ending a disfellowshipment requires convening another DC, and the submission of paperwork to SLC afterwards to clear the disfellowshipment from the membership record of the member.

Haven't seen the show yet, so I can't comment on the presentation yet.
